How to do a Bucket Test

Updated: Oct 11, 2021

If you think your swimming pool or spa is leaking, it might be time to try a bucket test. A bucket test will help you determine if your pool is leaking or if it's just normal evaporation.

What you'll need for a bucket test:

  • 5 gallon bucket

  • A permanent marker or bright colored tape

How to do a bucket test:

  1. Turn off all fountains, waterfalls, and auto-fill features. Do not splash water out of the pool during the test. If it is raining or significantly windy, plan to do the test on a different day as this can cause inaccurate results.

  2. Fill your 5 gallon bucket with pool water about 1 inch from the top.

  3. Place the bucket on the top stair of your swimming pool.

  4. Mark the water level on both the inside and outside of the bucket.

  5. Wait 24 hours.

  6. At the end of 24 hours, mark the water level on both the inside and outside of the bucket again. Are the two levels about the same or is the pool water lower than the bucket water?

  7. If the pool water level matches the bucket water level, you likely do not have a pool leak - it could just be that your pool water is evaporating. If the pool water level is significantly lower than the bucket water level, you likely have a pool leak.
